What would you do if you had the vision, drive, and passion to start your own business, to receive a better education, and to create a better life for yourself but had no recourses to make it happen?
This past January I had the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic and document a non-profit company that does just that. Global Effect’s mission is to partner with impoverished communities to bring sustainable transformation that has a spiritual, economic, social, and educational impact.
GLOBAL EFFECT EDUCATION PROGRAM
Since 2009, Global Effect has been involved in the local school systems in the Dominican Republic and have partnered with the local principals to bring about community change through young people living in these communities.
Global Effect realized that for those students that had the “right stuff” to be a positive role model and a leader in their community with a strong desire to create sustainable change, had no financial resources or option to further their education beyond high school. They had been given no opportunity to obtain the knowledge base necessary to be a great leader in their community.
After going through the 2 year Character Counts leadership program, high school students can now obtain a college degree and make their dreams a reality.
The Global Effect Education Program is currently implemented in 8 schools in the Dominican Republic.
In May 2011 Global Effect began micro lending in the Dominican Republic in order to transform communities by creating jobs.
Throughout the years Global Effect has given a variety of loans to people in need. Some of the original loan recipients have paid off their first loan and borrowed money to sustain or expand their business through a second loan.
The average loan to start a business is approximately $500 US dollars. Through this program lives are being changed and communities are being transformed by giving people the opportunity to work and provide for their families.
Micro lending is another way to spell HOPE in an area that is devastated with poverty.
I had the opportunity to see with my own eyes the HOPE being birthed within these wonderful people. Hearing their testimonies and seeing the joy and thankfulness in their eyes was life changing. You can’t make this stuff up. It was an extreme honor to capture the impact that Global Effect has had in these Dominican Communities.
